Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care Admission Requirements

The Department of Health Professions admits students to the Respiratory Care Program once per year for Fall Semester registration. 

PART I: GENERAL UNIVERSITY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

The applicant must be fully admitted to Youngstown State University

PART II: PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for the Respiratory Care program, the applicant must meet the following criteria: 

  • Application Deadlines:
    • Applications will be available starting on the first business day of October. Current students must apply by the 3rd Tuesday of January. The online application can be obtained by emailing Jennifer Myers at jlmyers09@ysu.edu for a review of prerequisites and an individual application link. No applications for Fall Semester will be considered after this deadline.
    • Transfer and former students must apply directly to the University Admissions Office before December 31 by completing the Undergraduate Admissions form and indicating Respiratory Care as the intended major. The separate application for Respiratory Care can be obtained by emailing Jennifer Myers for a review of prerequisites and an individual online application link. All necessary records must be received by the 3rd Tuesday of January each year.

 

  • Admission Considerations:
    • Admission to the University and completion of pre-respiratory courses does not guarantee admission to the program.
    • Developmental courses such as ENGL 1539 and 1540, R & SK 1510A and 1510B, MATH 1500, 1501, and 1504 do not count towards major requirements.
    • All prerequisites must be completed with a grade of a "C" or better.
    • Cumulative GPA of 2.00 or greater in all college work and a GPA of 2.50 or greater in pre-respiratory required courses. This GPA does not guarantee admission, but it will be used in ranking student applications.

 

  • Admission Ranking Criteria:
    • The number of pre-respiratory courses successfully completed.
    • GPA of completed pre-respiratory courses.
    • Cumulative GPA.
    • Admission may be approved even if all pre-respiratory care courses have not been completed if total applicants meeting all requirements do not meet the number of available clinical positions.

 

  • Additional Admission Considerations:
    • Number of course repetitions – Applicants will have, within the last five (5) years, no more than two (2) repeats in pre-respiratory courses listed above.
    • Spaces available. 

PART III: REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION PRIOR TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Upon receiving admission to the Respiratory Care Program, students must show satisfactory evidence of completed essential functions forms as a condition of admission.

In the semester prior to clinical practice (Fall Semester of Year 3), students must provide evidence of:

  • Completed history and physical examination.
  • Immunization requirements.
  • Criminal Record Check through the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Federal Bureau of Investigation Records involving fingerprinting.
  • Current CPR certification, BLS for Health Care Provider.

 

PRE-RESPIRATORY COLLEGE COURSES (or equivalents) REQUIRED:

  • Biology 1551 + Lab – Anatomy and Physiology  
  • MATH 2623 or MATH 2623C – Survey of Mathematics
  • ENGL 1549 or 1550 – College Writing 1 with support or College Writing  
  • PHLT 1568 – Healthy Lifestyles  
  • YSU Success Seminar (YSU 1500, YSU 1500S, or HONR 1500)
