YSU STEM Hosts NEOEA Day Professional Development Workshop for Ohio Educators
The North Eastern Ohio Education Association Day, or NEOEA Day, is a day in which educators of all grade levels from this area of the state of Ohio (northeast quadrant) attend professional development workshops to increase their knowledge and skills to benefit the students in their classrooms. For the first time, YSU STEM sponsored an NEOEA Day workshop on 9 October 2020.
The YSU workshop, “Experience-based Science Activities for the Classroom or Fair Projects” targeted local middle school and high school teachers. Organizers Mary Janek and Felicia Armstrong, faculty in the Department of Physics, Astronomy, Geology and Environment Science worked with Derek Joy, Integrated Science Education major, who assisted in preparing the files for participants by coordinating the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards - national standards) to the presenter's topics for the teacher-attendee's use in their classroom. Extensive information was shared regarding the topic so that area teachers could help to prepare their students for independent research that may lead to Science Fair Projects for the local, state, and national competitions.
Due to COVID restrictions, this year’s presentations were shared easily via Zoom. All participants reported that they appreciated being able to stay safe in their homes while attending a fun, interactive professional development day. There were presenters who reported to Kilcawley Center to present and others who chose to work from home or their office.
