YSU STEM Summer Research Program: Sponsored by the Watanakunakorn and Williamson Families.

The YSU College of STEM invites students who will be high school seniors or YSU freshmen in the 2025-2026 academic year to apply to participate in this incredible opportunity. Earn real research experience, working with one of our YSU faculty members. Through the experience, you will earn a 1 hour STEM internship credit and may earn up to $2100.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is eligible to apply?
    • Students who will be a high school senior or a YSU freshman in the 2025-2026 academic year are eligible to apply. Students who will be high school seniors must also be a YSU CCP student in order to participate.
    • If you are not currently a YSU CCP student, then you will need to speak to your school counselor to obtain permission to enroll as a YSU CCP student. They can reach out to ccp@ysu.edu or call 330.941.2447 with any questions or concerns
  • When will the program take place?
    • The program will take place over the course of 7 weeks sometime between June 9-August 16. The start and end dates are determined by the faculty mentor. You will see these dates listed in the application.
    • You must be able to commit to the full 7-week program as this is a college course. While occasional absences are ok, extended time away will not be acceptable.
  • How many students will be selected?
    • Twelve students will be selected to participate and will work in pairs with 6 of our faculty.
  • How will students be selected?
    • Students will be selected on the basis of their personal statement and recommendation letter, in conjunction with availability based upon their desired research project.
  • When and how will I be notified of my status?
    • All applicants will receive an email on April 28th letting them know whether or not they have been selected to participate. Any students who are not initially selected will be placed on a waiting list and contacted if a spot becomes available. Applicants who are selected will be sent additional information in that email regarding next steps, including attendance at an orientation on the afternoon of May 14th.
  • What if I am accepted but don't get my first preference for research project?
    • Students who are offered a spot in the program but do not receive their first preference for research project may choose whether or not to accept their offer. They will be placed on a waiting list for their project of choice and offered first opportunity if a spot becomes available.
  • What course credit will I earn?
    • In order to receive course credit, participants must be a YSU CCP student or an incoming YSU freshman. This is a REAL COLLEGE COURSE and you will be earning credit and a grade which WILL BE REFLECTED on your college transcript.
    • If you register to participate and then withdraw from the course, a grade of W will show on your college transcript
    • You will be registered in STEM 3790, a one-credit internship course. There are a few assignments associated with the course, as well as a public presentation of your research to be held on Friday, August 15th from 3-6pm. See course expectations.
  • How does the stipend work?
    • Participants will be hired as a YSU student employee at $15/hour. We expect you will spend on average 20 hours a week (140 total hours) on your research project (you must work at least 100 hours to earn your course credit). Your total stipend will be based on number of hours worked x $15, up to a total of $2100.
  • What if I have a vacation or other summer activities planned?
    • While we understand this is summer, agreement to participate in this experience is a commitment and this is a real college course. While occasional days may be missed, extended absences will not be accepted.
  • Is there any cost for participation?
    • All course, parking and lab equipment fees will be covered by the program.
