Seeking High School Juniors for Summer Rock Lab Experience
Seeking High School Juniors for Summer Rock Lab Experience
Are you a student (or do you know a student) who enjoys collecting rocks or minerals? Who has an affinity for the outdoors? Unlike other physical sciences, geology is often not offered in many regional high schools and so YSU STEM is excited to announce our first summer rock lab research experience for high school students to expose them to topics and experiences they might not otherwise get in high school!
The summer experience is designed to bring a dozen or more junior level students to YSU for a meaningful summer experience. Students can choose one of two 5-day sessions: July 12th-16th or July 19th-23rd. Participants will be introduced to safe operation of the numerous rock cutting, shaping and polishing machines in the lab and encouraged to let their creative juices flow making creative decorative and art work pieces from rocks, minerals and semi-precious gems.
Ideally, interested students will have a general interest in geology, paleontology, minerals and gemstones. Many teens have a love for the outdoors and have put together a rock collection of sorts. These are the types of students that would most likely be drawn to geology and spending a few weeks of summer making cool things from rocks and minerals.
Any high school juniors interested in the summer program should be encouraged to reach out to Dr. Jeff Dick directly at jcdick@ysu.edu.
