Week Ending March 8th...
More than 140 students from Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula and Columbiana counties displayed and demonstrated research projects inside Stambaugh Stadium during the Lake-to-River Science Day. Hosted by the STEM College, this annual competition provides opportunities for students, 5th to 12th grade, to demonstrate their skills as budding scientists. STEM faculty worked with area schools mentoring teachers, who then assisted students in developing their projects. Alyssa Armstrong, daughter of YSU GES faculty Felicia Armstrong, was among the individuals selected to participate in the state competition in Columbus. YSU STEM coordinated with Senator Sherrod Brown's tour and press event at NAMII. Senator Brown focused his attention on Workforce Development, providing an opportunity for STEM and WCBA to promote our Partnership for Internships and Co-ops, funded by the State. Senior Industrial Engineering student Matt Azam described his recent internship experience with GE Lighting as part of the press conference. Senator Brown announced new legislation to create the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. Dr. Gary Walker met with Pat Lowry, President of Jubilee Gardens and Press Secretary for Congressman Tim Ryan. Dr. Walker agreed to assist Jubilee Gardens by housing some seventy flats of garden seedlings over the next few months in the YSU Greenhouse. This community service will benefit Youngstown residents and provide an educational experience for YSU students. The service will also help raise awareness of the potential for expanded services and research opportunities made available through greenhouse repairs and enhancements.
