Biology major accepted into prestigious marine biology program

 

Brooke Schaefers is a senior from Butler, Pennsylvania majoring in Biological Sciences. During her time here at YSU, Brooke has been a member of numerous organizations. She has been the YSU Feature Twirler for the last 4 years, is a member of the Honors College, serves as the Vice President of the Honors Trustees, is a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, serves as the President of Order of Omega, is actively involved in First Year Student Services and was a founding member of Alpha Lambda Delta, and is also a member of Phi Kappa Phi and a graduate of the Emerging Leaders Program. She has also worked as a Teaching Assistant and is on the recruitment team for the Honors College.

Brooke is 1 of only 8 students selected internationally into the Department of Marine Biology and Ecology, in the Marine Mammal Science track at the University of Miami in Florida. She will be working to obtain her Masters of Professional Science and then be transitioning to the PhD program after. The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is one of the world’s premier marine and atmospheric research institutions. with one of the largest, most comprehensive marine and atmospheric programs in the nation.

After she finishes the MPS program, Brooke plans on continuing her graduate studies into the 5 to 6-year PhD program offered at RSMAS. Brooke’s career goals are to complete her doctorate degree and acquire employment in a marine conservation facility working hands-on with marine mammals in their natural habitats. She wants to join the research efforts in the “Cancer Therapies from Sharks” partnership to continue research into cancer-fighting substances and shark resistance. Brooke’s ultimate goal would be to specialize in Shark Biology and be one of the marine biologists on Shark Week.

Brooke will be graduating this Spring and will start her MPS program at the University of Miami this Fall. Congratulations, Brooke!
