Alumni Lecture Series: Ken Kagy

Ken Kagy

The Alumni Lecture Series welcomes Ken Kagy '79 P.E., CFM, CPSWQ, CPESC on Thursday, June 11 at 12:00 p.m. on the YSU Alumni Engagement Facebook page and Webex. Ken will present "An Archimedean Estimation to Hydrology Time Calculations'', which evaluates methods in hydrology used to estimate the time it takes storm water to runoff in various watershed characteristics.

Ken has worked in private consulting and local governments for the past forty years. He is currently employed as a City Engineer at the City of Milton, Georgia. His government sector experience involved extensive development plan review, stormwater infrastructure design and construction, floodplain management, community rating system coordinator, community floodplain outreach programs, and the implementation of new community DFIRM Maps. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and graduated from YSU in 1979. He is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Floodplain Managers, and the State’s Committee of Chattahoochee Basin Advisory Council. He is licensed as Professional Engineer, Certified Floodplain Manager, Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality, and Certified Professional in Erosion & Sediment Control. In addition, he conducts training for Georgia’s required State Certifications in erosion control.

The study examines standard empirical equations used to determine time from stormwater runoff. Graphical comparisons are made for different time calculations from recommended equations in NRCS’s National Engineering Handbook. The discussion will compare basic watershed characteristics used to calculate four different time of concentration methods. The presentation attempts to standardize the watershed variables of commonly used equations. In the final evaluation, uniformed equations are established from the comparison of classic hydrology time of concentration equations used in calculations on small watersheds.
