Altronic Legacy has a YSU Connection

Altronic Legacy

Altronic is a world leading manufacturer of ignition and control systems for industrial engines largely used in the oil and gas industry. It was established in 1955 originally as the Economy Engine company by local Youngstown business chieftains Leon Beeghly, William Bliss and William Kilcawley. These leaders would go on to philanthropically support major YSU initiatives. Now you see their names on buildings around campus.

Altronic offers components and systems used in engine control, ignition emissions control and instrumentation applications for the global aftermarket as well as original equipment manufacturers. These products are designed to improve engine performance, enhance reliability and streamline operating efficiency -- helping to reduce emissions and contributing to a healthier environment.

Business is split between power generation and gas compression, in North America, Europe and other parts of the world. This global distribution network originates from three production facilities covering over 90,000 square feet of space in Girard Ohio, with close to 200 employees. The company prides itself on research and development efforts to innovate high-energy ignition control technology —holding over 30 best-in-class patents.

Altronic has a deep history with YSU, beyond its founding partners. More than one third of the Company’s salary team are YSU grads. Currently four YSU students are part time employees. According to Debra Neiferd, Altronic HR manager, “We've hosted multiple internships and part time employees from YSU over the years. They play a big part in our recruitment and growth strategy.”

Aaron Phifer a Software Design Technician, credits networking for his Altronic internship and job. “I was working on my Electrical Engineering degree, but also took classes in programming,” he said. “In helping other engineering students with coding projects, another Altronic intern recommended me for an internship there. This internship eventually became my full-time job when I graduated.”

Several of Altronic’s interns have gone on to managerial or technical positions with the company, including Hailey Sturtz, Inside Sales Manager; and Thomas Westbrook Quality Control Engineer Cost Center Manager.

Altronic’s collaboration with YSU enables students to learn about the business of ignition systems in a real-world application as they decide their career path. At the same time, it allows Altronic to build a pipeline for potential employment.

Aaron is testament to this collaboration. “I was able to work part time at Altronic and work around my classes at YSU. The flexibility to do both was helpful. I also let my co-workers know about my capstone project and they supported me when I needed flexibility to work on that project.”

A corporate commitment to engineering and customer service excellence has helped make Altronic the standard for most major gas engine manufacturers around the world. The YSU connection helps to make that happen right in our own backyard!
