On February 12, 19 schools and over 140 students showed off their math skills at the 32nd annual MATHCOUNTS Competition. MATHCOUNTS is a competition for students in grades 6,7, and 8 sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. This event provides a fun outlet for students to apply their mathematical knowledge and be recognized for their efforts. The competition consists of several different events, with the two major components being the Sprint Round, where students are given 40 minutes to complete 30 problems, and the Target Round, where students have eight problems, with each set of two problems the students are given four minutes to complete them. Along with the Sprint Round and the Target Round, a quiz bowl format competition takes place in the afternoon, both with an individual competition and a team competition. This year’s top six teams were, in order, Poland Middle School, Howland Middle School, Holy Family School, Canfield Village Middle School, Boardman Glenwood Middle School and Boardman Center Middle School. The top six individuals were, in order, Sam Delatore from Poland Middle School; Alex Stoneman from St. Charles; Jacob Snyder from Poland Middle School; Ashlin Rabindra from Poland Middle School; Matthew Rossi from Holy Family; and Emily Warhol from Boardman Glenwood Middle School. Poland Middle School was the MathBowl champion this year, and St. Charles took home the Most Improved School Award. The winners of the Countdown Round were, in order, Ashlin Rabindra from Poland Middle School; Alex Stoneman from St. Charles; Sam Delatore from Poland Middle School; and Jacob Snyder from Poland Middle School. In addition to the top three teams (Poland, Howland and Holy Family), the following individual students advanced to the state competition in Columbus: Alex Stoneman from St. Charles; Emily Warhol from Boardman Glenwood Middle School; Diego Calderon from Poland Middle School; Tanner Tsvetkoff from Canfield Villiage Middle School; Dominic DeRamo from Canfield Village Middle School; and Marisa Spooner from Lisbon David Anderson.
