Kevin Rabold - Senior Recital
This senior recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the B.M. in Music Performance
Based off of the poem Merlin by Edwin Arlington Robinson, which tells a story of the destruction of King Arthur’s court. The first movement represents a scene where Sir Gawain is nearing Camelot and searching for it on the horizon with a sense of impending doom. The music is representative of this with sustained chords and a slow melody. The second movement deals with the breaking up of man’s ideas of order as time goes by, with the piece being chaotic in nature.
The German word for chase or pursue. I started out writing the piece with only the idea of passages of fast singles in mind, but added to this idea as time went on. It was only later thinking about how the piece sounded as a whole that it reminded me of a chase in some way, hence the title.
Performed and recorded by the group Return to Forever, Captain Marvel appears on the album entitled Light as a Feather. Light as a Feather is the group’s first album and fuses elements of Latin and jazz music. The group includes Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, and Flora Purim.

Tinplay is Per Andreasson’s first work for percussion. The title can be taken literally as the players are required to play on an assortment of tin cans and metal objects. This piece appears on the album ‘Slagverk’ from Naxos.

A marimba trio written for a Musser 4 1/3-octave marimba that is shared by all three players. It is dedicated to Stefan and Mary K. Stuber and their musical studies in Nicaragua. This piece is made up of three sections with the middle section consisting of a cadenza featuring the center performer.

Kevin is a senior percussion performance major at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music. Born and raised in Franklin Park, PA Kevin has studied piano since age five and percussion since age nine. He is a 2006 honors graduate of North Allegheny High School where he performed in the wind, jazz, and percussion ensembles and was section leader in the Tiger Marching Band. During his sophomore year he served as principal percussionist for North Allegheny’s production of Titanic, which won the 2005 Gene Kelly Award for best all-student orchestra. He was twice selected as a PMEA all state musician and as a MENC all eastern musician. He has also performed with the River City Youth Brass Band. Upon graduating from North Allegheny, Kevin was presented with a Pennsylvania State Senate Meritorious Citation for his musical accomplishments. Kevin now serves as head percussion instructor of the North Allegheny Tiger Marching Band.
At Dana, Kevin performs as section leader in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, is a member of the percussion ensemble, and also performs with a jazz combo. In the past he has performed with the brass ensemble, jazz combos along with jazz ensembles I, II, and III, the Dana Symphony Orchestra, and YSU Marching Pride. He also serves as president of the Youngstown Percussion Collective. Independent of the university Kevin was a member of Matrix Indoor Percussion during the 2007 season.
Kevin has received the John Phillip Sousa Award and the Frank Farina Fine Arts, Blackwood Theater Organ Society, Tuesday Musical Club, Pittsburgh Piano Teacher’s Association, and the Dana School of Music scholarships.
