This is an instructional etude that is meant to test the performers sensitivity to low dynamic control and technical mastery. Though the piece is not intended for performance, it is a clear illustration of the performers technical and dynamic comfort with the instrument.
Chapter Two, verse 67, of the Bhagavad Gita suggets that the movement of our senses among the sense objects is similar to the wind carrying a ship across the waters. This image resulted in the spacious and tranquil material in the piece.
The verse goes on to suggest that the object to which the mind is joined takes away one’s discrimination. This concept is reflected compositionally by grabbing hold of thematic elements as points of departure and elaboration. Notes by Dave Hollinden.
CaDance is an intentional misspelling of the term “cadence,” meaning the drum ostinato, which accompanies a marching band. Here, the two drummers have ostinati of different lengths (50 and 49 eighth notes respectively) and are constantly changing phase with respect to each other. Each of the drummers is also playing in two different meters (4/8 + 5/8 and 3/8 + 7/8) so it is up to the listener to determine what (if any) the meter is and where (if any) the downbeat is. Notes by Andy Pape.
