Math Students Succeed in Competitions
Youngstown State University was the only United States school to receive a meritorious or higher award and honorable mention in the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) Modeling Competition.
Working in Cafaro House during the Feb. 10-12 event, YSU students competed against 400 colleges and universities participating at other sites around the world. YSU was among 275 American colleges and universities involved.
"This was an outstanding tribute to YSU students who competed since it was the first time YSU had entered this competition and also since YSU does not offer any modeling courses," said Dr. J Douglas Faires, '63, mathematics and statistics professor and competition advisor. YSU math students have received other awards during the year. At the annual meeting last August of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary society, Alayne Clare of Lowellville and Scott Clark of Mineral Ridge won awards for best talks. This April YSU also won the first award given for most student talks at Ohio's Section Meeting of the Mathematics Association of America. Speakers included Komara, Clark, Lucarelli, Lynda Kistler of Vienna, Heather Ludwick of Masury, Jason Martin of East Palestine and Nakia Rimmer of University Heights.
